Does anyone know of a source of inexpensive maps of the TN River and the Mississippi River? My wife and I are planning to move from Chattanooga TN to the FL Keys area next fall. We will only need the maps one time, thus the request for an inexpensive set. Digital would be fine (we have laptops), paper would do also of course.

Get a copy of coastal Explorer. $300. $400, if you wait much longer.

With Coastal Explorer, you can use (and they include a CD with all available charts included) the free NOAA S57 charts currently being developed

I don't know what detail they are going to take the Mississippi to. Currently, I have all the latest available charts as of Monday. I was able to follow the Mississippi up to Henderson KY. I don't know how far it goes, hopefully the length to the river to St. Paul where it is no longer Navigable. But, bottom line, at Henderson, you're north of TN and you should be covered.

edit: Just followed the mississippi up to Coon Rapids, the Minnesota to Shakopee. The St. Croix to Stillwater. Sweet.

Now, the charts are not currently as detailed as close up Nav Charts are in the coastal areas, hence my comment, I don't know how detailed they are going to go. This is an ongoing project and the charts may get more detailed, they may not.

But Currently, you can see the navigable portion of the river and more importantly (since the navigable portion of the river would be marked with nav buoys) you can gain from a reading the charts, a sense of what is coming next and in using a program like coastal explorer can get a pretty good idea of distances between points. There are other items on there, including things like cable crossings, where anchoring is prohibitted, etc.

Anyway, that would be my choice...

I have chartbooks from Tennessee down the Tenn/Tom you can have if you'll return them.
Just made the trip last month and you are welcome to them if that would help.

Wm,

Wm here (actually my name, I have no middle letters in my "William").

We would LOVE to borrow your chartbooks! We don't plan to go down until October '06, but it would be nice to look and plan a little in advance. What if we were to borrow them for a little while (paying for your postage, of course), return them for your "safe-keeping", then borrow them agian when we get ready to go? We have several books that we've loaned to friends, some who have had them for years, but know that whenever we might want them they would be readily returned.

Thanks for offer!

Hey Wm, thanks from Wm!

Carolina and I enjoyed getting to know you and some of the guys up there. We'll study the maps and get them back to you soon.

We went to pay for the beers but Larry had beat us to them! Tell him (again) thanks from us - we owe him a couple. :D

Looking forward to seeing the mile-markers click down next year. Only 419 days to go. We bought one of those "count down" clocks so we can see our goal every morning when we wake up.
