Although my Mistral is done so far as Scarano Boat Building is concerned, I still have many projects to undertake.

First is to install the new Andersen self tailing primary winches I bought a couple of years ago...

on here...

The old winches were bolted down with bronze lag bolts. I'll have to do the same with these, but I'll be using stainless.

Next will be to actually install the new lazerette hatch I made. Right now, it's just sitting on top of the lazerette for appearances sake.

How about you guys? What projects are you about to undertake? Perhaps someone else is thinking about undertaking the same project and can benefit from your experience.

I've got 30 years of hard bottom paint I have been trying to take off. In some spots it had flaked off under water, others had come off with the pressure washer when the boat was hauled, and the rest I have been trying to remove myself. So far, the best tool I have found is a 1-1/2 inch putty knife. I can get that under the paint and with scraping, it pops off without much damage to the gelcoat. I tried the peel-away, but that didn't seem to do much for me.

I've been thinking about a barrier coat, but if the boat hasn't had many blisters to speak of in 30 years, is it worth it?

Hell, that's beautiful work you've done to your old girl there Dave, good job!

All I have to do is to bring the hard rubber part of a rub rail back to life. It's became chalky with a bit of mold growing near the edges.
I was going to have the wife hit it with something like a 3M green scratchy pad and then work it out to a shine before putting some sort of rubber lube/protectorant.

Anyone have any pointers for bringing hard rubber back to life?

I've been working on my brightwork...sanding, varnishing, repeat.

Yep, a Baba has a lot of brightwork, BUT this wasn't on Soņadora. It was for Punkin', our orange Zodiac tender. Brightwork you say? The floor is made of varnished plywood and I have to say it's quite nice looking now. I also painted the oars black and added 3 coats of varnish to them. Today I'm going to wash the zodiac and fit the floorboards.

Pictures to follow...

Other projects:

Install 'flash' water heater
Repair bilge pump switch
Fix port side spreader light

hopefully all done by this weekend.

Having removed from and finally reinstalled many parts on Journey, my Dovekie trailer boat, I took it up to Hagg Lake a coupla days ago to splash. I'd test run my Honda 2 hp in the bucket and though the mast is still bare and under wraps, I figured a good motor-around shakedown was in order. The ramp was empty so I took my time launching, studied it as I went and didn't get my feet wet. This is important to me, don't like wet feet. Easy launch, floated her off and backed her down the dock. Cranked the motor on the first pull, shut it off to turn the boat around by hand in the tight launch quarters. Pulled the string and.....the motor never started again. Pulled and pulled and took out the plug and looked and smelled the gas and...... A good samaritan (I think I'm heading for geezerhood) stopped and tried his stuff with a lighter on the plug and so on to no avail. So..I loaded Journey back up on the trailer, flawlessly and with dry feet, and headed home. Notwithstanding the motor issue, I had a great time, the dog had a great time. Motor is in shop for a new kill switch.[/img]

Holy cow, Dave, surely you're not gonna bore HOLES in that work of art?!! Isn't it time to go old style and just use deck tackle on the sheets? Holy cow!!

Dave,

I noticed you're missing your compass. What's the story?

After work we need to drive our spar from the public landing to Rockport Marine. Not a long drive, this is the rise at the end that takes some pushing.

My daughter was a trooper and helped to the end, here she is wrapping the last tape on the spreaders. I had to replace the rigging having removed it for refinishing the spar.

Having taken the time to tape and mark all the rigging, everything clicked into place and I was headed out in about an hour. Later, while putting the rigging on the mizzen and stepping it(we do that at the public dock), I had an odd line with a block and shackle left. Oh yeah, I was so careful labeling stuff. What could this be? Just the spinnaker halyard. Oh well, that's what 13 year old sons are good for, hoisting.

Who cares now, it's done and we are sailing tomorrow.

Dave,

I noticed you're missing your compass. What's the story?

I just haven't installed it yet. I remove it in the fall and put it in my living room.

http://www.fultoncomputer.com/cwbb/DaveGibson_Compass.jpg

I'll mount it Saturday, along with my boom, sails, dodger, and winches.

Got time for a funny story? Jahnn had the compass sitting on the passenger side floor of her BMW Z3 convertible. One fellow passing by did a double take and said "That's some navigation system BMW has."

LMAO!

Yep, that's the upside down antenna for my old Micrologic GPS. Good eye!

The nicest thing that I can say about it is that it works. It gives me lat/long and speed, which is all I care about. But I have more fun with my little Garmin, which I hook into my laptop which is running OziExplorer. I use old US Geological Survey maps from the late 1800s on it. Since my manmade lake was flooded in 1930, I can watch myself sailing over roads and railroad tracks, and even past peoples homes.

No, I wasn't drunk. It was a windless day.
