I recently heard about a new group called "Potters without borders " along the same lines as Doctors without borders. What they are doing is showing people in third world countries how to make ceramic water filtres that sit on top of a standard 5 gallon plastic bucket. You pour water in the top, and as it filtres down thru the ceramic , it is purified. They mix the clay with a certain size sawdust ,and as it is fired in the kiln the sawdust burns out , leaving the ceramic porous. Then it is treated with colloidal silver to kill any remaining bugs that make it thru, leaving the water sterile and free of bugs, totally safe to drink.
Sounds like something yachties could use. Maybe potters you know would know the proccess, or where to find info on the proccess.
