We anticipate cruising to the Bahamas next winter on our sailboat with our 16yr old daughter,Andei. Anyother teens plan on being there next winter? Get in touch with us--would love to have someone for her to hang out with while we are there. Also, interested in what others are doing for homeschooling. We would like for her to take on-line classes and was wondering if this would be possible due to limited internet access or is it no problem? stacyk40@hotmail.com

Good Morning,

We are also anticipating going to the Bahamas this fall/winter, but we are bringing our son (11yr) so our kids will not probably hang out. We will be on s/v More Cowbell and are leaving from Texas in October (post hurricane season). We are home schooling with Calvert, mostly books and worksheets since we don't have a satellite connection yet. They offer online support that we can get when at port (internet cafes and such). I think this is best we can do without satelite. What is the name of your boat? We'll look for you. Anyone have any experience with Calvert?

morning, sounds like were going to be in the same water for a while as i plan to leave the chesapeake bay just after xmas for turks. then mosey back to fla and north. Hoping to return to VA in April 09. I heard something about a cruising fee for the Bahamas. Other than the local "tax" when checking in. I'd just like to know what sort of extra costs might i expect. HAppy cruising, I'm on a TMI 30, 'pay no attention 2' FWFS, gary

You can expect to ante up $300.00 when you clear in to the Bahamas.

On the topic of Internet access, I was surprised by high much Wi-Fi we encountered last year in the Exumas. It's well worth the money to invest in an antenna you can mount topsides (if only a little USB network adapter). I often had to bring my laptop up in the cockpit and even then couldn't connect while friends with antennas did just fine. I wouldn't count on taking an entire online course, but it's nice to be able to surf the web and catch up on e-mail on a high speed link when you can.
