I have been to the DR. There are many nice anchorages but you're not allowed to use them ! You're required to go from one official port to another; not allowed to just coastal cruise wherever you like.

I´m sorry to here this same response quite often that you´r not allowed to stay anchored in the DR. Some things have change around here, I have been around the whole island and had no problem at all. I have heard of people that have had to pay for an anchorage but NEVER that they have to leave...

You have to have in mind when you go here, this is not USA, ore Europe. Im not saying that everything here work like they should but I´m saying that there have been progress.

obviously you will have an easier stay (as in almost all Latin countries) if you speak Spanish, but you cane go around without that too, and have a bless.

If you are prepared, and now your rights, you bee fine! and you will have the stay of your life. here is a lot of nice anchorages where you will be alone and I can guarantee that you will find a lot of nice and help foul people.

Like many people heading for the Caribbean from Florida (and points North) we only initially stopped at Luperon. We found the officials to be helpful but everyone expected to be paid. We did enjoy our stay in Luperon and only visited one other port in the DR while heading to PR. The annoying thing was having to get clearance papers for the second port, incurring more fees.
