San Diego to Hawaii..Anyone made the trip?

Looking at the possibility of making a Southern California to Hawaii voyage. Wondering what to be concerned with, i.e. best time of the year, prevailing winds, shipping lanes, sea conditions.....I don't know if it's a popular trip and was not able to find anything on the forums about it, so any info from experienced Hawaii sailors would be helpful.

Sailed from Long Beach to Honolulu in 1971-it is straight down wind in the trades- 15 knots, 12' swells. Piece of cake. Coming back is tough, if that is what you plan to do. Go north a 1000 miles or so and sail East from there to get back.
