I am looking for a suitable compass for a 33 ft all-steel tiller steering sailboat (no room for binnacle), on which I had planned/hoped to install the compass on the bulkhead (steel) next to the companionway (and therefore off the centerline). My big concern is with compensation for deviation. Would the Ritchie HB-845 Steel Boat Bracket Mounted Helmsman Compass be suitable to install on this boat and in this location? Any helpful direct or related feedback or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I have the impression that I've got a bit of a problem here, but there must be solutions, and there must be people out there who know solutions.
Thanks in advance for replies.

SESTRAL MOORE is the one you want Very good compass correctable and mount on your cabin top near the companionway. For ocean work I prefer a GRID STEERING one but I have always had wooden boats, but friends who have steel boats swear by the Sestral moore.

Thanks. And yes they still seem to be available. I found SESTREL online, although the company was apparently bought up by another. The SESTREL MOORE compass is still listed, as are other SESTREL compasses.

Change your tiller for non magnetic stainless type 316 , or aluminium.
The Drigo card compasses , made in Seattle, are some of the best. They don't make them anymore, but withe fishing fleet being dismantled, there are plenty available cheap ,second hand.
A compass adjuster once told me that dome compass has a power factor of around 7 or 8. A Dirigo grid compass has a power factor of 400.
I put mine in front of my steering station in my wheelhouse. While it is out , it is not out by much. Surrounded by steel inside seems better that outside with steel only below it.
