I have a older (80's) Hood Roller Furler on my boat - it differs from most current RF in that instead of a single line that you pull to furl the sail it has a continuous loop of line that engages in a drum. This loop leads back to the cockpit and you pull on one side to furl the sail and the other, in concert with the sheet to open the sail. The line needs to be cleated in place while not in use otherwise the sail will just unfurl itself. Two problems with this arrangement - the only logical place to cleat the line is near its end which falls just about at the jib sheet cleat so the two actually share a cleat - even if I put in another cleat there the lines would still get tangled up. The other problem is that since both sides of the loop are identical I can't tell which line to pull and just sort of do a trial and error thing. Ideally I'd like to put the controls for these lines near the bridge deck - the line needs to move in both direction and also needs to be cleated in both directions so jamb cleats are out I think. I also can't cut the line to do anything - help - I think this goes out to anyone that has ever had one of these systems

I had that system on my first boat. As for line organization, I had Hood double line rollers that mounted to the stanchions to lead the line aft. The top line was one direction and the bottom the other. As for cleating off, I just grabbed both lines and tied off around a lifeline stanchion with 2 half hitches, Never failed or slipped.

My first boat had the Hood furling system. A 32 ' Morgan. It had what was called a line driver mounted on the stbd. side of the stern pulpet / rail .it was just outboard of the primary winch.it was nothing more then a grooved shive with a locking device. the endless line went around the shive, when you wanted to roll out the sail you removed the winch handle from the middle of the shive , rotate the lock and the shive would allow the sail to roll out. when you wanted to reef or furl you rotate the lock 180* put the winch handle back in and crank, the lock will allow the shive to turn in one direction only in that position. Worked great. Came from Hood with the furling system.
Good luck

... have you considered changing the continuous line drive (LD) unit into a single line (SL) unit?

There is an adaption made specifically for this.

Drop me a line if you have any questions as lately I very rarely check this board anymore (sorry) :( .
