I have an 8 year old Catalina 28 and have an increasing amount of Surface Rust on the base of the stanchions at the weld point to the base.
I have removed and cleaned, however I need something to seal it with.
Does anyone have any secret solutions to solving this without replacing stanchions.
I would be happy to find a product that will remove the rust and lock the metal in a chrome looking wrap?
I am looking for something that looks reasonable, not perfect
thanks :?:

Hello Sparky,
Here's a good article on how to passivate stainless steel to help with corrosion:
http://www.worldstainless.org/articles/ss_passivate.pdf
You can also do a Google search uner "passivating stainless steel" for other information.

Heh Sparky
If you hang on to old Cruising World issues you might find the article I remember seeing on this subject from 1 to 2 years ago. The author made some good technical points especially about cleaning (use soft non abrasive materials) and recommended some user friendly products for re-passivating.
I just checked the Cruising World site and found no web access to the article :( . To bad CW doesn't maintain a web based access to all of these articles. In fact, I had so many torn out pages of such info. that it overwhelmed my file and I just recently tossed it all away, including the above article.
Good luck, Roger

Sparky,
Try using a little white vinegar to pickle the weld once the corrosion has been removed. This is a poor man's path to passivation.
Cheers,
Steve
