We just purchased some property in Georgetown, SC. Specifically, right on the Sampit River just off of Winyah Bay.

Anyone have any thoughts, advice or interesting information about sailing in the area?

Thanks,

nice place - stayed on icw and did not use inlet so can not tell about that. Significant currents in the rivers which were pretty but limited with fair amount of thin water so it may be a small shoal draft boat for the river or something more sturdy for playing off shore. Charlestown would be one day away Suspect it will be hot in the summer, but that's just a guess.

Try "Cruising Guide to Coastal South Carolina and Georgia" by Claiborne S. Young in paperback. I have the North Carolina book and fing it excellent.

Long time cruisers - who live right nearby. They just recently swallowed the anchor. Doc and Nan Murphy. They are probably in the phone book - Dwight Murphy. Give them a call and tell them Kate and Chuck sent you!

Winyah Bay has plenty of water, but it has a lot of shallow water. Saying that, I see a few sailboats during the year sailing. Of course now this time of the year most sails are heading South. Best bet would be to keep the boat in Charleston. This would be about an hour drive and you would have plenty of deeper water. If you bought property on the Sampit, I suppose you bought in Harmony? If so you could probably make Charleston in 45 minutes. :D [/quote]
