View Full Version : Sail bag on forestay
We are looking for some advice for how to design and sew our own sailbag that will stay on the forestay. (I'm probably not stating my question very clearly ... but we want to keep our hank-on-genoa permanently on the forestay and have a sailbag that hangs off the forestay.)
We tried googling for ideas but it would seem that as we don't have the correct terminology, we can't get any information  .

I took an old spinnaker bag and had the sailmaker cut a round hole in the bottom of the bag and then run a zipper up the side to the top.
you tack the sail down through the hole in the botton , unzip the side ,untie the drawstring at the top, and add the halyard and zoom. up goes your sail.
we use this for storm staysail but will work for any sail.

That's a common thing to see. Mine was made from Sunbrella with a zipper up the front, a ring to hang the halyard on to keep it raised off the deck, and one or two rings to tie off so it doesn't sway back and forth. THe sail stays tacked.

Hello, Sailrite (sailrite.com) makes a sailbag kit that can just live on the forestay. I made one last year for my staysail and love it. Easy to make, easy to use. And, no, I have no affiliation with them.

Sorry we didn't get back here for awhile... we've been busy. The Vasco de Gama Yatch Rally has been dockside... way too many holiday spirits
THANKS for all the suggestions. And Westcoaster the picture really is help.

I also have a sailbag similar to Westcoaster's. While it is nice to have the foredeck clear of the genoa, I find it difficult to stuff all that sail in the bag. Plus, I wonder how good it is for the sailcloth fibers to be crammed in so tight. Also, it hinders forward visibility a bit when not being used.
I am about to change my color theme, and am going to make a bag that is nearly the length of the foot of the genoa, and will run it along the port side lifelines, attached here and there, so it will be up off the deck. Seems like it will be easier to use and easier on the sail, yet still out of the way. And not as much bowsprit work! :)
