I think they bought Columbia's molds:

Following Dick Valdes' departure from Columbia Yachts, the company was reheadquartered to the east coast, and was eventually sold to Hughes Boat Works, and later to Aura Yachts. In the mid-80's, Hughes regained control of the company. Eventually, Columbia Yachts faded from history.

If you "Google" Hughes Boatworks.... you'll find a number of references.

Hi Bella

Not sure if you will get this. You can e me if you want, I am leaving for the day and won't be checking back most likely.

Anyway....the Hughes 38 is the boat that Capn Fatty Goodlander of CW fame has been sailing, with his wife, for at least the past 15 yrs. More than one circumnavigation. He has written extensively about the boat and seems to remark that it is robust, strong and a good sailor.

In addition, remember that this same hull was bought and used by Hinckley for their 38 footer. You do not often hear about the Hinckley 38, but I believe it was well regarded.

Could be a nice boat at a nice price. Keep in mind, no qtr berth with that boat...old design that ended at the companionway. More space in the cockpit lockers I suppose.

Hope this helps

There are two distinct models of Hughes 38, one from the late '60's - early '70's and another that was produced from mid to late '70' onward. Both were Sparkman and Stevens designs. I believe the Capn Fatty Goodlander boat is the latter version and the Hinckley related boat is the early design.
