I'm in the market for a new outboard motor for my AB 260VL and have looked at the Mercs and Tohatsu's. From what I understand they are both built by Tohatsu and are identical. I've rulled out Honda and Yamaha based on HP to weight and the poor reliability record of the Honda. Both the Suzuki & Johnson are also identical and the same weight as the Merc and Tohatsu. What does the board suggest???

I bought a 6hp tohatsu last fall. Dont have much runtime on it yet but so far no complaints. The weight issue was was the primary reason I selected this model. I use it on a 9'4" inflatable with a hi-pressure inflatable floor. It will plane with one person aboard, but not two. Came with a 8 inch pitch prop. I bought a 7" pitch prop as a spare but have not tried it out yet. The motor runs very smooth and quiet. Has a LED warning light and a audible alarm for low oil pressure. Very easy to get on and off my stern outboard mount. I don't think there are many 6hp 4-strokes available any more that are NOT made by Tohatsu. Hope this helps.
