Nanotechnology may soon give cruisers less power-hungry desalination plants. Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have discovered that water molecules flow easily through carbon nanotubes while the ions that make up salts are rejected.

We started out with a pair of 200-mile days on the passage from Bermuda to St John. After spending the weekend waiting for Hurricane Noel to get well clear, on Monday, November 5, we hoisted the main in St George's Harbour, bent on the newly repaired jib, and reached out Town Cut at nearly 10 knots. We turned right at the Spit buoy and poled out the jib on the port side sailing south at more than 8 knots, rolling in the leftover waves from the hurricane.

"Beat feet! Let's get out of here now or we'll be stuck in here in Newport for another week!" That was my mantra as we prepared the ex-Whitbread Around the World Racer, Ceramco NZ, to leave for the US Virgin Islands. We finally got under way and cleared Castle Hill a little before sunset on Sunday, Oct 28.
