If anyone is headed for Puerto Vallarta, or the west coast of Mexico and needs information, I will try to help. We've made the trip down from Puget Sound twice and went on to circumnavigate the Pacific on the first cruise. We are currently the Seven Seas Cruising Association Cruising Station hosts for Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay.
Although some of our information about the South and West Pacifc is a bit dated, I will also try to answer any questions about those areas as well.

"Kapn" is right. Unless you are remarkably educated and skilled, you will not be able to find an employer to sponsor your work visa...which is the only way to get one. To get a residence visa you need income from outside Mexico. Unless you are retired with a pension or are wealthy, it is simply not possible for you to support yourself in Mexico.
