    Default getting prescriptions

I am a cruising newbie and want to know how others have gotten prescription medication while cruising. And did you figure out how to take a big supply at the beginning?

Talk to a local, ask them if they can refer you to a sympathetic doctor. Pay your consultation fee, explain that you are sailing and get the prescriptions. No problem! If you know you are prone to certain diseases, make sure you have enough medicines for a while when you start. In some countries, you can get medicines over the counter that normally you would need a prescription for (in Indonesia we could get antibiotics over the counter). We always have on board:
    - antibiotics (for skin, stomach, bladder etc.)
    - insect repellent and spray for stings and bites
    - a range of pain killers (also morphine)
    - antibiotic and anti-fungal creams
    - lots of band-aids and gauzes, splints and tapes
    - sutures, thermometer, tweezers, rubber gloves
    - sulfur based wound powder, hydrogen peroxide
Duncan & Irene - Duncan is from Canada, Irene from Holland, but both of us consider Curacao our home country, since we have lived there for quite a while before we started cruising.
Moose is a steel cutter and has taken us so far for 35,000 miles almost around the world.
We have just arrived in Richards Bay, South Africa and we have decided to stay here for a year. We have visited a game park and it completely blew our minds away......

Thanks for your question Lisa we are planning on leaving in 13 months or so that was one of my questions along with taking a hand gun on board, my brother travels for a living and said that would be something we need to think about, what are the rules of the caribean and laws of gun ownership anything like the states? wow so many things to thing about? exciting and scarey at same time. I am looking for any tips and suggestions. I know it is awhile off but, so much to plan for. we are leaving the Detroit area in may or june of next year and going south to keys and further- sailing on 31ft Hunter( I know small but it is perfect and we have had this boat for 12 yrs and know it like the back of our hand safety and engine). Also will blood pressure and thyroid last that long on board a boat when it is very warm and humid if i can get enough to last a year a time.?

My husband and I live near you (Auburn Hills) and also want to make our departure, heading south, within the next year! We have a Hunter, also. Perhaps we could bounce ideas, plans off each other?! Carolyn
