Right now I live up north in Alberta to save money, pay off all of our bills, and sell everything so we can spend all next summer on a sail boat for the summer, then sail as far as possible next winter. I've been doing research non-stop and I have not been able to find the answers to my questions.
So what I'm going to ask is, what kind of boat would be good for me, my girlfriend, and my puppy to live on for the entire summer, then sail very, very far away? Whenever I search on websites it always asks if I want a cruiser, daysailer, motorsailer, etc. Now I know nothing about boats, nothing at all, so I need to know what style of boat I'm looking for.
Second, I need to know what size would be good, I've heard of people doing it on large boats, and small boats. Now I know this comes down to preference, but as I have no experience, I have no preference. I don't need anything large, just big enough for us. My dog is small, and my girlfriend and I are minimalists.
Any other information on what kind of boat I should be looking for would help greatly! Thanks so much for the read.
Hi there,
I would like to do the same than you , but we are 4 with daughter 8 and 14. I have been reading and talking to many people who are boating now.
After many conversations and reading books as Bernard Moitessier, etc,, finally I decide a steel hull for security reasons because often , charts are unreliable and you never know.
The size depens on many things, but also the more big , the more big problems , and expensive. And for solo sailing is better not more than 50 feet. I thing for a couple 42 is perfect.
I suggest you to surf in internet , there are hunreds of pages about people who are sailing.
good luckk!!! Willy
SATW, Good idea to pay off all of your bills. save as much as is posible. when you find the right boat, you will know it. just make sure of two things. you better LOVE that boat becuase it will need every dime you can spend on it. and secondly, it does not matter how far you go. it matters that you have fun where ever you are.
average cost of cruising is $40,000. per year
all the best
