Any ideas on how I can join some people on sails around here in New Haven CT. Just moved here and having a hard time meeting people in the sailing community.
Please check out the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. Www.shyc.us. We have both Corintian and full
Active membership depending upon age. You might enjoy the Ideal Ladies who get together regularly to sail our Ideal 18s. There is Friday evening PHRF and weekend J-24 racing and someone always needs crew. We also have spring and fall Laser frost biting.
We are a year round club with many social and educational events.
I am a past flag officer, board member and Race Committee member and would be happy to speak to you about our club and sponsorship.
Thank you so much for your reply! I was reading the last issue of cruising world in to my surprise they put my post in their magazine. I took a look at the website and it looks like a lot of fun! I have never been to Stonington but I will have to venture that way. I enjoy mystic every time I have been there.
I've lived & sailed from New Haven, East Haven, West Haven & Branford for over 50 years. The Yale Boat House in Short Beach Branford, on the water, is where the Yale Sailing Team resides. It used to be for a nominal annual fee you could use their boats, take sailing lessons, keep a small sailboat to be dry sailed there. Branford Yacht Club is a sort of blue collar club where members are obligated to provide services to the club to keep the expenses down. I've been out of New Haven since 2001, but I probably still know people who who could introduce you for membership. New Haven Yacht Club in East Haven, an all sail yachtclub, is also a situation where the members are obligated to provide services, but unlike Branford, they don't have slips, all the boats are on moorings. There is also the Pine Orchard Yacht Club in Branford which also has a golf course on the water and Milford Yacht Club. Probably the best way to start would be to noodle around the Yale Boat House or wander around Bruce & Johnson's Marina in Branford or Milford Boat Works on a nice spring week-end when everyone is working on their boats.
If you post some information about yourself and the kind of sailing you want to do ( racing, cruising, daysailing etc.) I might be able to hook you up or hook you up with someone who can. Good luck!
I am a student at the University of New Haven and veteran of the Navy. I am studying Mechanical engineering and focusing on renewable energy research. I am looking to learn and enjoy being on the water, I am open to racing, and daysailing or just giving a helping hand sanding and painting if some one needs it. I do not feel I should pay thousands of dollars to learn to sail but I also realize the importance in safety and knowing what is going on. I have walked around Milford and the Boat Works. There are a bunch of beautiful boats out there. Unfortunately, it was late into the season and the people I talked with were getting ready to get their boats out of the water.
