My hubby and I are interested in finding out what others do regarding
health insurance while away. We are divers is DAN insurance recommended.
Our Ont. insurance won't be applicable so we need private. We are
in St. Maarten for some period but will be moving about. Any ideas?
This is exactly what my wife just told me to post....what do cruisers do (us being from Texas) when you are in another country and there is a medical emergency? Does everybody carry health insurance, and if so, do other countries accept it or do they want cash?
By all means sign up for DAN unlimited insurance. It is incredibly valuable. Recently a friend slipped and fell and injured a disc in her spine. The cost of airlifting to Florida was US$30K. If she had had DAN insurance the cost would have been nothing except for the minimal cost of the insurance premium. See DAN.org for details. You may have to hunt a bit to find the insurance section.
Unless your national or private insurance has "international" coverage provisions you will have to pay cash or other means. You can purchase special "travellers / vacation" medical coverage from several different companies from the internet. They are quite reasonable - but first, check with your insurance officials or policy to see what the "international coverage" is for your system.
Steer clear of Travel Underwriters , Worldwide Mediclaim. I once made a claim with them and they simply refused to pay when they found out I didn't have a credit card for them to put my expenses on and force me to go to court for reimbusement. I have met others who had major problems with them. Their first priority is to find a way to weasel out of paying.
