Default Solar venting question

I need to increase the ventilation in the aft lazerette of my center cockpit sailboat.

I have seen many boats with a vents added to this space.

I would like to hear from those of you who have this kind of set up. I am wondering how the set up works as far as what happens when it rains or you go sailing . Do you have to physically have to go and close the vents to keep water out ?

I have friends who bought a boat with solar vents in the hatches and they leak, I dont want to let more molsture in.

Another concern , is the added vent able to be stepped on or would that cause damage. On my boat it would be positioned so that it would most likey be under foot.

If you had to do this installment in another boat.....would you .....hate the idea of cutting a 3-4 inch hole in the deck of the boat.

I am open to any comments or ideas.

thanks so much to this forum for all the great info.

Default Re: Solar venting question

I've installed solar vents in two different sailboats. no leaks if installed properly. I prefer the Nicro 1000 day night 4". close them if taking on waves. the first one I installed is still running years later on the original battery.
the stainless shell gives a little additional support to the body of the vent. I've stood on mine, 6'3, 290 lbs.
